Does my racquet need a restring? How often should I restring my racquet?
As a beginner/ casual player hitting occasionally a few times a month, you will tolerate a greater change in string tension compared to that of an intermediate player hitting a few times a week or more. Here are a few things to look out for to help recognise when it is time for a fresh set of strings.
-
Are your strings moving and shifting? Loosening tension can cause the strings to shift out of place when hitting.
-
You may notice notching which looks like little groves at the intersection of the strings in the middle of the racquet.
-
Fraying is also a common factor seen in your natural gut strings.
Physical signs
Tension loss
-
String tension drops the fastest within the first hour after stretching and will continue to drop, even without a single stroke.
-
This can lead to a “trampoline effect” on the racquet that simultaneously increases the impact power and reduces control.
-
Loss of overall control and difficulty with topspin on the court.
-
May find balls are "flying" or landing out without added power.
Arm/ elbow comfort level
-
Humidity, heat and the sun will also wear out the strings quicker and cause faster drop in overall tension

-
A stiff or dead feeling that can be harsh on your arm.
-
A freshly strung racquet will absorb the shock better providing more comfort and reducing risk of this occurrence.
